The aim of the world exhibition in Astana is to increase awareness about the topic of energy. The exhibition aspires to serve as a signal for nations, organisations, and the general public to cooperate in cross-border efforts to meet the global challenges of the future.
From 10 June to 10 September 2017, the world exposition EXPO 2017 will take place in Astana, the capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan. More than three million visitors are expected.
Some 100 countries and international organisations will present their ideas and solutions relating to the exposition's chosen theme, Future Energy. In December 2015, the Austrian federal government confirmed Austria's participation in the world exhibition and appointed Richard Schenz as commissioner of the Austrian section for EXPO 2017. Funding is provided by the Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy and the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber. The EXPO office is responsible for the preparation and execution of the Austrian pavilion.
Refreshingly different: Austria shows its unconventional side
Our message is unambiguous: Along with technical know-how, human energy is imperative to overcome the global challenges.
The conceptual design of the Austrian EXPO 2017 pavilion underscores this principle, giving each visitor the opportunity for playful interaction. Individual performance is important, but only in cooperation with others can enough energy be generated to make a real difference.
Our exhibition consciously stands out from the otherwise screen-dominated EXPO, and presents Austria as a country of innovation and creativity. Fun and unexpected exhibition elements serve to forge a link between people and the topic of Future Energy.
From the project description:
"The Austrian pavilion focuses on the potential of human energy in a whimsically creative way, exclusively employing human muscle power as an energy source.
"Visitors pedal, press, swing, pull, kick, and operate a plethora of brightly lit, audible, poetic, funny, and instructive devices. The more the participants combine their efforts, the stronger Austria 'vibrates'.
"With brain, heart, and muscle power, the exhibition is powered by participatory human energy. The result is an image of Austria that is vivacious, imaginative, and active!"
"The challenges posed by global energy and environmental issues cannot be solved on a purely national level:
Humankind must cooperate globally
- with brain, heart, and muscle power!"
The EXPO 2017 Astana and our pavilion are open daily for you:
10 June to 10 September 2017, Monday to Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Tickets for the EXPO in Astana are available on the official EXPO website:
The 25-hectare EXPO grounds are located four kilometres from the new government district. The location is conveniently situated between the city centre and the airport.
The buildings are arranged in the shape of a turbine. This design element symbolises a water or wind turbine, referring to two sources of renewable energy.
The central element of the exhibition's layout is the Kazakhstan National Pavilion ("Sphere"), around which four themed pavilions, an art and cultural complex, and fourteen international pavilions, each with four to five national pavilions, are arranged.
You will find us in the second international pavilion, right next to Switzerland, Latvia, and Czech Republic.
